I remember when I first started listening to drum and bass, an old friend of mine pulled up Super Sharp Shooter. It was a funny sound, but something about the groove and the rythm could not let me go. This was a tremendous time for my musical development, it got me into dub, reggea, hiphop, dubstep even, I kept circling around this ādrum and bassā sound as if it was already set in stone that this was supposed to be my thing. I will dive into a couple of my selected tracks, the reason I picked them, and what makes them good to me.
The track that got me into DnB!
First, 174 trek, by DJ Zinc has been on repeat here since day f-inā 1. To me, this track in particular really binds that wonky grip of a classic drum and bass track: nothing too serious, all the focus on the hype and the vibe. Even when playing it today, it will wake up the audience almost instantaneously! To me, this is my personal all-time drum and bass favorite. Itās so simple, and that makes it good.
Yes, I am still addicted to bass.
Then, Addicted to Bass by Puretone. This is a special one, and I also remember listening to this track since the early days. I am not even sure if itās ātechnicallyā a drum and bass track, but most certainly heavily inspired by jungle mechanics. What gets me into this track, is the lyrics. The woman singing this, brings my entire relationship to the genre to front: itās never enough bass, Iām living for the scene, and no one can tell me no! And next to the lyrics, I think we all agree on this, it feels like a complete tune from front to back, over the entire 3 minutes it takes. I feel this is one of those songs, that should never be forgotten into history.
The ultimate party track.
A group that only recently got up into my favorites, is 4am Kru. I did not know 4am Kru before 2025, and I think itās fair to say I have grown since into one of their biggest fans. Especially their track Ribena, itās fantastic. I have always been a fan of āretroā music styles making it into modern electronic styles as samples, and the 1950ās swing-ish drop in an intense jungle drop is something that keeps on getting me. Everytime I play it, the audience seems a bit confused, some get it, and then on the drop.... party. This is certainly my main party tune!
The track I canāt shake off.
The last track I want to specifically mention, is Cheater Cheater, by Original Sin. This has to be one of the maddest, biggest, baddest jump up tunes ever produced. I added the original, because this is one of the tracks I played on my very first gig 17 years ago, and still play it sometimes until this day. Itās incredibly easy to mix, and it always mixes well! Jump up like this, they donāt make it anymore. Make sure to catch up on the recently released 2025 master, it is almost as good as the original!
