1. Dope Skillz – 6 Million Remix (Mix 1)
When I was about 15 my friend got a cheap belt drive turntable and some vinyl from a thrift store. One of the records he got was Lemon D - This Is LA. When I heard that (having been introduced to jungle through Inner City Life by Goldie), I was totally sold on the rough sounds in combination with the funky melody. So next time I joined him to score some vinyl and the first record I got was 6 Million Remix. The vocal spoke to me as a young kid of course but the bassline and breakbeats grabbed my soul, 30 years later I'm still rinsing this :)
2. Rebel MC feat. Top Cat – Champion DJ
I think I first heard this tune on a mix from some tape pack (Jumping Jack Frost maybe?). All-time classic ragga-jungle vibes with great vocals from Top Cat. The second drop with the Kunta Kinte melody (The Revolutionaries) blew my mind. Such a banger. This one I still play a lot too and included in one of the oldest mixes I have online (look for it on YT).
3. Majistrate – Retry
Best 2 step tune ever imo, the bassline is so hypnotizing. I remember recording this to tape and listening to it over and over on the way to school. Very underrated I think, never heard anyone play it and that's a shame so I had to include it in this list. This was jumpup before "wap wap sounds" turned it into something else (which is fine btw!).
4. Alicia Keys – Un-Thinkable (Lenzman Remix)
I realized there was no liquid in this list and since that is also one of my favourite sub genres of dnb I had to correct that mistake. This is a special tune to me, because of the lyrics and overall vibe- but also because as of writing this, the last time I heard it was a week ago when Goldie played this at a tribute for Lenzman who sadly passed away just 2 days ago.. RIP Lenzman, thanks for all the great tunes. Your legacy lives on ❤
5. Paradox – All You 2 Step Bastards Leave Our Planet
Something that was also missing in this list was some proper drumfunk! The call to prayer vocal might offend some people, that is not my intention of course. I think it's a beautiful vocal and I think the vibe that it gives is very powerful and moving. Also sorry Dev for putting this on the same list as Retry ;P I'll see myself out now..
6. Bad Company – The Pulse
Heard Grooverider play this in a big tent at Dance Valley, it changed my life. It starts of with that typical BC atmosphere but then it goes silent, the tent goes dark. All you hear is that staccato neurofunk stab coming in. Then the hihats guide you into the drop and once that immense dirty bassline drops it's bassfaces for everyone! Really difficult to stay still to this. Still one of the greatest and darkest neurofunk tunes ever IMHO.
7. Dom & Roland – Imagination (Kemal & Rob Data Remix)
Talking about neurofunk, this remix is also great. Very dark but still funky with slick production and groovy drums. It wasn't easy picking the best Konflict tune, I could've gone for many others (Messiah, Bleed, Animation remix) but recently my mate MC Swift reminded me of this one and yeah, it's amazing. All about the drop in the middle at 2:44. That bassline destroys dancefloors and also the second drop with its slightly detuned reese sound is just, chef's kiss!
8. Dune – Hardcore Vibes (Cooh DNB Bootleg)
Ok time for some cheese after all that darkness :D This holds a special place in my heart because as a bit of a gabber I used to play this (or the original, or any other remix I could find) at a lot of the closing sets I did for my old crew Deep Cutz. Big up all the Deep Cutz crew, MC Noia and MC Multiplex especially- thanks for all the lovely memories and long lasting friendships! IYKYK ;)
9. Current Value – Mothman
And of course straight back to more darkness. This is a crazy tune, very hypnotizing, bit of a difficult rhythm for first timers but one of my absolute favourite tunes by Current Value. Those kick rolls! Reminds me of flashcore. The melody is also very cool and the structure is great for mixing- just keeps on going. Love this tune.
10. Limewax – Agent Orange
The last one is a perfect closing tune and I mostly included it in this list because I think no-one else will and imo Limewax deserves a spot :P Almost the exact opposite to the jungle at the start of the list- very 4x4, very "flat" but also an absolute beast on the dancefloor. The offbeat reese bassline saves it from being too straight forward and that melody stab is just so recognizable, if you "sing" it everyone that knows the tune will know exactly what's up.
That's it for my list- I tried to be as varied as I could but it's impossible to cut it down to only 10 tracks. Also just went for stuff that's older because when you're an old head like me you cannot forget about the past. Maybe we can do a curated by again later and then I'll focus on stuff that's released after 2010 ;P Peace out!
